Scarface: Devil in Disguise
SCARFACE IS BORN IN SCARFACE: DEVIL IN DISGUISE.
IDW Publishing Presents The Beginnings Of The Original Gangster!
San Diego, CA (April 27, 2007)—In the 1983 Brian DePalma cinematic classic, Scarface, Tony Montana came to America to pursue his version of the American dream. Fans of the movie the world over know how that story ended… and now they will finally get a chance to see how it all began. IDW Publishing is proud to present the definitive prequel to that fan-favorite film in the form of the five-part comic book miniseries, Scarface: Devil in Disguise. The comic book miniseries is developed through a licensing agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group.
Before Tony Montana came to America, he cut his teeth as a young military assassin in Cuba, and rose up as a hustler in Havana. He knows the world is his, and he craves the American dream. But first, he's gotta get out from Castro-imposed solitary confinement. Add to this Molotov cocktail mix the CIA, La Cosa Nostra, and the scumbag who gave Montana his infamous scar. Make a deal with the devil…just know which devil you’re dealing with first. Hell hath no fury like the ghetto opera brought to you by the outlaw team of Joshua Jabcuga (Doomed) and Wizard magazine's Heat Index artist Alberto Dose (Desperadoes: Buffalo Dreams).
"I wanted Scarface: Devil in Disguise to read like a true prequel to the film," said writer Jabcuga. "That is, if a prequel of the film was actually produced in the '70s, not in the '80s, the '90s, or even today. No, in the '70s. It's not an alternate-reality tale. Instead, it dovetails with the movie, sometimes with subtle references that only the most diehard Scarface fans will catch, and at other times, in very obvious ways."
"It was great to imagine a sequel to the movie," stated IDW's Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Chris Ryall, referring to the 2006 comic book "follow-up" to the movie, Scarface: Scarred For Life. "And now it's equally interesting to me to go back and look at the character's early years. Whereas the sequel was a bit lighter in tone, Devil in Disguise takes a darker turn, and really sets the mood for the character arc that Tony will experience in the movie."
Scarface: Devil in Disguise #1, a 32-page, full-color comic book, is the first issue of a five-issue miniseries debuting in July 2007 (Diamond Order Code MAY07 3543). Also launching from IDW Publishing in July will be Scarface: Scarred for Life TPB and Scarface: The Movie Scriptbook.
