Humor Meets Horror as IDW Publishing lets The Claws Come Out
The premiere modern horror comics publisher prepares to release a screamingly funny new hardcover collection this November
San Diego, CA (October 12, 2007)—IDW Publishing's very first comic book took the industry by bloodthirsty storm, as 30 Days of Night-to be released as a major motion picture this month from Sony-redefined the vampire comic and injected new unlife into the graphic genre. Now, however, IDW puts some grin into its fangs with The Claws Come Out, a screamingly funny new hardcover collection of the acclaimed minicomics from award-winning indie cartoonist Pat Lewis, to be unleashed by IDW in November.
An apathetic scientist works late to defrost the Abominable Snowman; a naïve blood donor dates a rageaholic vampire; a two-bit fortuneteller inadvertently sparks a zombie epidemic. And did we mention the Martians, werewolves, serial killers and B-movie monsters, as well as the smashmouth grindhouse chicks? Okay, then-IDW Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall will tell you all about them.
"What? No I won't!" says Ryall. "I couldn't possibly be as funny as what Pat has got in this book. Horror has been mixing with comedy ever since the days of Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, all the way up through the Scream movies and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Pat has got it all in here. He's taken two different comic book genres and experimented on both their brains to create an entirely new comedy monster."
Lewis is a freelance illustrator and self-publisher of several celebrated minicomics that have earned him a large and loyal fan-base. The Claws Come Out will be his first book. He has won multiple accolades in recent years, including a 2004 Outstanding Minicomic nomination for an Ignatz Award, North America's Premiere Independent Cartooning and Comics Arts Festival prize, and multiple nominations for the Howard E. Day Prize, awarded yearly for outstanding achievement in self-publishing.
"My three favorite things are comics, women, and monsters, so I mashed them all together and this was the result," says Lewis. "I really had a blast writing and drawing these stories, and I think that sense of fun shines through in the final product."
The Claws Come Out will rip through stores in November 2007 as a deluxe hardcover-with-slpcase and 152 spooky black-and-white pages. It will retail for $19.99. Diamond order code SEP07 3756.
