The Complete Junior And Sunny Catches Eyes This December

Al Feldstein’s Racy Cult Classic Collected!

10628397_10152666537703279_8985262432199137542_n-1 IDW Publishing is proud to announce the release of The Complete Junior and Sunny, which presents the full run of these historic comics created, written, and illustrated by the legendary E.C. Comics artist/writer/editor Al Feldstein.

Imagine a young Betty Page type meeting up with some late-1940s, typical-teenage types (a la Archie), and you will get an idea of what is to be found in The Complete Junior and Sunny. Along with an in-depth Introduction by Grant Geissman, the book also presents the issue of Meet Corliss Archer that Feldstein also produced for the notorious Victor Fox, of Fox Feature Publications.

Done between 1947 and 1948 in the period right before he moved to E.C. Comics, Feldstein’s bold artwork and salacious figures are on full display, providing a wonderfully guilty pleasure. Long considered to be prime examples of late 1940s “headlight” and “Good Girl” art comics, issues of Junior and Sunny have been quite difficult to find and very expensive to obtain. Until now!

“Although the stories are basically charming, ‘typical teenage’ period pieces, Feldstein’s artwork for them often pushes the envelope for the time,” says Geissman. “With titillating covers and often-suggestive images in the stories themselves, it’s probably a good thing that Dr. Fredric Wertham never found out about Junior and Sunny!” Seduction of the innocent, indeed!

Look for the complete collection this December!

IDW Publishing & Yoe Books Gives Us A Tour of Milton Gross’ New York

“Lost” Graphic Novel From One of The Most Influential Men In Comics Uncovered

Milton Gross’ New YorkTo those to that know Milt Gross and his work, he is a legend among legends. For those that don’t, in 1930, Gross wrote and drew one of the very first graphic novels, the acclaimed He Done Her Wrong. Gross was also a popular comic-strip creator (with hilarious cartoon-style Yiddish-isms), novelist, produced animation (for Disney and MGM), and was a screenwriter (and co-writer of films with no less than Charlie Chaplin).

IDW Publishing and Yoe Books are very proud to be releasing the “lost” graphic novel, Milt Gross’ New York, this December. In a mind-blowing, laugh-filled, freewheeling tour of New York, Gross’ character, Pop, and his sidekick son, blast through the East Side, the West Side, Chinatown, and Harlem. The demented duo roar through Yankee Stadium, the New York Public Library and Coney Island! This is really the Big Apple like you have never seen before and it’s all kinds of amazing!

“Gross was a comedic genius,” said Craig Yoe. “Publishing our previous Gross book, The Complete Milt Comic Books and Life Story, and now this rare, important and hilarious lost graphic novel would make me proudly stand tall—if I wasn’t rolling on the floor laughing from Gross’ guffaw-inducing work!

The book offers all of this as well as an insightful introduction by none other than huge Milt Gross fan, the comic industry’s greatest innovator, and man about town… Jim Steranko!  Yes, THAT Jim Steranko!”

Here is your chance to experience one of the first and most brilliant graphic novelists’ work and just in time for the holidays. Don’t believe us? Here’s what some other luminaries have had to say about the man:

“I love all his work—what a goofball!” —Robert Crumb

“Still Great!” —Jules Feiffer

“He frees you up!”—Patrick McDonnell

“Dig!” —Matt Groening

Offered again! The Complete Milt Gross Comic Books & Life Story • ISBN: 978-1-60010-546-3

HC • FC • $24.99 • 104 pages • 7.5” x 10.5”  • ISBN: 978-1-63140-173-2

Vampire Cult Classic Sunglasses After Dark Gets Collected

Vampire Cult Classic Sunglasses After Dark Gets CollectedNancy A. Collins’ Celebrated Comic Book Series Becomes Her First Graphic Novel Collection

San Diego, CA (August 13, 2014) – Vampires are part of today’s popular culture but in the 1990s, they were underground. And that is exactly where Sonja Blue, the protagonist of Nancy A. Collins’ (Vampirella, Swamp Thing) comic book series, Sunglasses After Dark, hunts for the monster responsible for making her one. IDW Publishing is proud to be collecting the cult-classic miniseries for the first time in a fully remastered graphic novel due this November.

“I am thrilled to finally see Sunglasses After Dark collected as a graphic novel,” said Collins. “The road was long, but the end result is something I am proud of. My collaborator, Stan Shaw, has outdone himself as both artist and colorist. I think fans of Sonja Blue will be pleased. ”

Acknowledged as one of the first Urban Fantasy novels, Sunglasses After Dark burst onto the fantasy/horror scene in 1989, garnering widespread critical praise and winning the Horror Writers Association’s coveted Bram Stoker Award. Together with artist Shaw, Collins adapted the novel into a six-and-a-half-issue comic-book miniseries, which became an instant cult classic. The IDW collected edition will be digitally re-colored by series artist Shaw, completely re-lettered by Eisner and Harvey Award winning letterer Thomas Mauer, and features re-tweaked dialog and narration by Collins herself.

The story begins in a madhouse and goes on to reveal the mystery behind the disappearance of a nightclubbing heiress and her transformation into a tough-as-nails punk vampire/vampire-slayer. Sonja Blue is a “living” vampire who still possesses a soul, and is determined to fight for what remains of her humanity, while still seeking bloody revenge against the vampire who attacked her. But as dangerous as hunting down vampires may be, it is nothing compared to her greatest foe: The Other–the demonic alter ego with which she is locked in constant battle for the body they both share.

If you like your vampires with a bit of grit and a side of punk, this is the one for you. The full-color, 212-page hardcover is coming for you in November (ISBN: 978-1-63140-162-6).

The Search For Edward Scissorhands Begins At IDW

The Cult Classic Returns With All-New Tales!

7c63ad0c-eecb-400b-8b05-4329781a13d9San Diego, CA (July 25, 2014) – Just in time for Halloween, IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products are proud to announce the first in a number of new projects together, with the first ever Edward Scissorhands comic book series. The long overdue all-new adventures begin in October, with New York Times best-selling author Kate Leth (Adventure Time) on writing duties and Drew Rausch (Haunted Mansion) lending his delightfully spooky style to the interior art. Rounding out the creative team will be acclaimed Locke & Key artist Gabriel Rodriguez, who will provide a stunning and suitably creepy cover for the debut issue.

“Edward Scissorhands is one of those dream projects that only pop up once in a lifetime, so any new story set in its universe demands to be treated with love and reverence,” said IDW Editor Sarah Gaydos. “We’ve found a team in Drew and Kate, along with a crew of top cover artists who are not only exceptionally worthy of the task, but are bringing something completely fresh and relevant to the table.”

The 1990 cult-classic film from auteur Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands ends with the heroine of the story, an aged Kim being asked by her granddaughter, “How do you know he’s still alive?” to which she answers, “I don’t know. Not for sure. But I believe he is.” In the comic book event of fall 2014, IDW Publishing revisits this modern classic two decades after the end of film to finally answer that question.

“I’m overwhelmed with excitement to be writing Edward Scissorhands. As a former (and lifelong) teen goth, few things are as close to my heart as Tim Burton’s cult classics,” said series writer Kath Leth. “We’re taking the story forward in time and telling a bit of a girl detective story—one of my favourite genres—a bit closer to modern times but still with that eerie, anachronistic touch. It’s a bit creepy, a bit scary, but always full of wonder. Drew and I have so much love for the film, and we like to think it shows. Keep your eyes peeled for easter eggs and plenty of spirals…”

Kim’s granddaughter, Meg, grows up with Edward Scissorhands only being a legend, a bedtime story. But when weird things start to happen in her sleepy little town, it reawakens her curiously and she decides to search out for the mysterious Edward Scissorhands.

“I keep having to remind myself that this is happening—but if there was ever a team made for telling the further tales of Edward Scissorhands, it has to be Kate and I,” said series artist Drew Rausch. “No—seriously, IDW just built us a few months ago from some parts they had lying around. It’s been a little weird. We’re still getting the hang of all this “living” stuff but we promise to deliver a story that’s just as perfectly timeless, chilling and heartwarming as the original—cross our cookie hearts!”

What Comes After The Bigger Bang? New Creator-Owned Series Explores The Cosmos

San Diego, CA (August 18, 2014) – In one explosive moment our universe was born—and with another it will be destroyed! This winter, writer D.J. Kirkbride (Amelia Cole) and illustrator Vassilis Gogtzilas (Adventures of Augusta Wind) team up for THE BIGGER BANG, a four-issue mini-series exploring the depths of humanity through the warped lens of an ever-expanding multiverse. This action-packed space fantasy defies the laws of science and the comforts of belief!

“My artistic pal Vassillis approached me about doing a comic with some kind of outer space superhero, and that pretty quickly became THE BIGGER BANG,” says writer Kirkbride. “It’s a comic about forging one’s own destiny despite circumstances of birth or the past… starring a space god in orange tights, a three-eyed green warrior lady, and a Cthulhu in a flying space castle.”

Created by an inexplicable universe-killing event, the being called Cosmos traverses the stars, seeking to help those he can in order to atone for the sins of his birth. Often mistaken for a harbinger, Cosmos soars the intergalactic space ways alone… but will soon find himself up against an alien tyrant on his quest for acceptance.

Series editor Justin Eisinger, most commonly found overseeing IDW’s expansive line of books and graphic novels, described his experience as such: “THE BIGGER BANG is a story with heart and vision. The off-kilter pairing of Kirkbride’s quirky writing and Gogtzilas’ expressive, kinetic artwork work in perfect disharmony to bring this impossible story to improbable life. We sure hope you have as much fun reading BIGGER BANG as we’re having making it.”

The Bigger Bang will light up comic shops beginning this November. Don’t miss out on this intergalactic epic!
